{"id":907,"date":"2010-05-11T11:26:22","date_gmt":"2010-05-11T18:26:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stoccoroy.com\/blog\/?p=907"},"modified":"2010-05-11T16:04:34","modified_gmt":"2010-05-11T23:04:34","slug":"never-say-never","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stoccoroy.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/11\/never-say-never\/","title":{"rendered":"Never Say Never"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m discovering as I get older that perhaps I&#8217;m the kind of person who prefers the quiet.\u00c2\u00a0 Those of you who know me well might be saying, &#8220;Duh, Sarah.\u00c2\u00a0 Aren&#8217;t you the woman who has chosen to spend most of her summers in a tent in the woods?\u00c2\u00a0 And hey, didn&#8217;t you live for an entire year in a state park?&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 So perhaps I&#8217;m a little slow on the uptake.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean, really, I kind of think screaming should be reserved for when you&#8217;re being eaten by a bear.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;d think I would have figured out by now that I prefer <em>quiet<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But seriously, sometimes these insights creep up on me and I realize, &#8220;<em>Oooohhhhh<\/em>, there are different people in the world.\u00c2\u00a0 Those who like it noisy and those who like it quiet, and I like quiet!&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 So imagine my surprise when I said to myself, &#8220;I really should buy Griffin one of those fake phones that makes all kinds of noise when you push the buttons!\u00c2\u00a0 And maybe it should be in Elmo&#8217;s voice!\u00c2\u00a0 And be able to say Griffin&#8217;s name!\u00c2\u00a0 That would be an awesome addition to my life!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I&#8217;ll confess that I&#8217;ve often looked with disdain at those toys that light up, talk to you, and do all kinds of things that seem unnecessary.\u00c2\u00a0 I believe the words, &#8220;The WORLD is stimulating enough!\u00c2\u00a0 I will <em><strong>never<\/strong><\/em> buy something like that for my child!\u00c2\u00a0 Kids don&#8217;t need all those bells and whistles!&#8221; have come out of my mouth on more than one occasion, definitely with an eye roll for dramatic effect.\u00c2\u00a0 But <em><strong>need<\/strong><\/em> is the operative word here.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course kids don&#8217;t <em><strong>NEED<\/strong><\/em> those things, but they sure do like &#8217;em, and Griffin is definitely one of those kids who delights in things that go &#8220;whirrrrr!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sure, he&#8217;ll play with the beautiful stuffed animal I painstakingly made out of felt or the natural wooden blocks, but what he really, really loves is carrying our cordless phone around while pushing the buttons to hear the noise and watch it light up.\u00c2\u00a0 We were ending up chasing him all over the house making sure he didn&#8217;t dial 911 or India, and finally I decided he needed a phone of his own.<\/p>\n<p>I considered looking at the second-hand stores first, but frankly traipsing all over Oakland with Griffin in tow pursuing this one thing I may never find wasn&#8217;t too appealing.\u00c2\u00a0 So I headed to Target as part of a greater errand run, and the choices were surprisingly limited (apparently the newest thing for kids is to have their own play <strong><em>laptop<\/em><\/strong>, so I guess I&#8217;m behind the times).\u00c2\u00a0 It was either Elmo, Buzz Lightyear, or some obnoxious Japanese character I&#8217;ve never heard of.\u00c2\u00a0 I had to forget my goal of purchasing things without television or Disney characters on them (I guess I&#8217;ve got a lot of issues), and let Griffin play with Elmo and Buzz in the cart to see which seemed the least disturbing.\u00c2\u00a0 Surprisingly, Elmo won.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, Elmo is pretty cute, and Griffin absolutely loves the phone.\u00c2\u00a0 He carries it all around, puts it up to his ear and says, &#8220;Hay-lo!&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 He hasn&#8217;t touched our real phone since, and thankfully Elmo has an <strong><em>off<\/em><\/strong> switch for those times when we need just a <em>little<\/em> more quiet.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_919\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-919\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stoccoroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ElmoPhone.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-919\" title=\"Elmo Phone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stoccoroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ElmoPhone.jpg?resize=300%2C199&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stoccoroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ElmoPhone.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stoccoroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ElmoPhone.jpg?w=722&amp;ssl=1 722w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Griffin and his new best friend<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m discovering as I get older that perhaps I&#8217;m the kind of person who prefers the quiet.\u00c2\u00a0 Those of you who know me well might be saying, &#8220;Duh, Sarah.\u00c2\u00a0 Aren&#8217;t you the woman who has chosen to spend most of her summers in a tent in the woods?\u00c2\u00a0 And hey, didn&#8217;t you live for an &hellip;
