Still Life with Children
It feels especially hard these days to find the beauty in everyday moments, but I’m trying harder to look at my world each day and find something to make me smile. These kids, man: they’re pretty great.
Oliver’s Second Birthday
We celebrated Oliver’s birthday a bit early this year because we’ll be up at the cabin on the actual day, and we wanted to celebrate with Grandma Pam and Grandpa Jeff. We enjoyed a birthday brunch together featuring a fabulous spiced squash cake that everybody loved except for Oliver. (He ate about half the scrambled eggs instead.) Pictures below followed by two short video clips.
We began the morning with an early present of some blocks that Sarah picked up at a recent yard sale.

Halloween 2018
Sarah was inspired this year. A green dragon, a red, dragon, a mermaid, Prince Ronald, and the Paper Bag Princess!
Maggie’s Quilt
I finally finished the quilt I started for Maggie before she was born, and it really was more rewarding finishing it now because she loves it so much ❤️
Mushroom or Spider?
At first we weren’t sure if this was a crazy looking spider or a weird mushroom with a spider under it. Turns out, it is definitely the former. We think it is a marbled orb weaver, though we’ve never seen one quite like this before. Apparently some people call them pumpkin spiders or even halloween spiders. Coloring can vary widely.
Daily Pilgrimage
This is our daily pilgrimage after the big kids get picked up by their bus: to watch the trucks and construction across Snelling. We often get waves from construction workers, truck drivers, bus drivers, and passers-by. And most days, I love doing it with him. He gets SO much enjoyment out of such a simple thing, it’s hard to say no. ❤️
Science
We found a dead monarch butterfly on our walk today, which lead to breaking out the microscope to look at the scales on the wings, which lead to Maggie and Griffin breaking out the science goggles and doing science projects. I just found these observations sitting on the front steps: “Science Projects!!! When we put the vinegar with the baking soda in a glass jar and put the lid on, the jar leaked because of the pressure.” 😍 #kidsarenaturalscientists
First Day of School
Griffin is in fourth grade. Maggie is starting first. At a Montessori school, this means that they’re both in new classrooms with new teachers and a new mix of students. They couldn’t be more excited to go.
Not quite old enough for school, but may start preschool in January.
First Triathlon
Sarah rocked her first triathlon! She’s been training up for the past few months for the Minneapolis YWCA Women’s Triathlon. The event took place this morning — a blazing hot one — by Lake Nokomis. The whole family (including Jeff and Pam) was there cheering her on from start to finish. As Sarah posted on Facebook earlier:
It still hasn’t totally sunk in that I just completed my first triathlon, but I did! 500 yard swim, 15.5 mile bike, 3.1 mile run, finished in 1 hour, 41 mins and 31 secs. I am super happy with my time, and so thankful for this body of mine. Also thankful for my friend, Keely @keschallock who I got to finish with unexpectedly, and @noquitfitoutdoorfitness who have sparked a love for outdoor fitness and have been immensely supportive and positive through all my training! What an amazing event!
