Maggie Walks!

Maggie is now 13 months, and she has crossed the threshold into walking! We have been expecting this for over a month and a half now, but she has proven to us once again that she’s on her own schedule. One of the reasons we suspect she has been waiting is that she’s been getting around quite well with knee walking (which she demonstrates at the beginning of the video. She also demonstrates her use of the sign “more” in there, too), much to the delight of strangers when we’re out in public! Today, while Griffin and I were playing a game, something just clicked for her and off she went. It’s only a matter of time before she starts running to keep up with her big brother!

Maggie Busts a Move

Maggie, my parents, and I recently flew out to Oregon to attend a dear family friend’s wedding. It was a lovely day spent in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, but Maggie was beyond tired after dinner and we thought it was time to go as the evening set in. Just as we were preparing to say our goodbyes, the music started playing and Maggie perked up. Unprompted by anyone, she started tearing it up! The video I captured unfortunately missed some of her best moves, but you’ll get the idea. Next time the crankies are coming on, I think I’ll throw on some fast tunes and get her to dance!

Favorite Song

It’s February in Minnesota, and we’ve been having a lot of dance parties to get out our energy. Griffin’s hands-down favorite song is Say Hey by Michael Franti. He calls it the “I Love You Song” and he could listen to it all day long if I let him! He recently made up a dance called The Salt and Pepper, which involves shaking his fists up and down, “like I’m shaking salt and pepper!!” It’s pretty cute, and if it gets his energy out, I’m all for it!

Maggie even has a dance of her own, too:

The Magic Song

When Griffin was a baby and he would start to lose it, I would sing to him to try to calm him down. The song that seemed to work best was “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” I would start singing that song and he would stop his crying and start to smile. It worked nearly every time! I posited that since I was teaching kindergarten while he was in the womb, he had grown fond of the songs I played guitar to and sung to my students which naturally felt calming to him.

Unfortunately, now that Griffin is nearly four, the magic has worn off. However, it is now the magic song for Maggie! If she starts to lose it, we all break out the song and start clapping our hands, and next thing you know, she’s happy (fake it til you make it?)! I don’t know why it works for her, but it is the one thing that will stop her in her tracks. It has now become a participatory song for her, as well:
