Garden

Despite all the land around our house, we haven’t grown many vegetables yet. We’ve planted a few tomato and pepper plants around the edges of other plots, and a few herbs, but nothing like the small farm we had at our old place.

With her characteristic energy, Sarah decided to do something about that this summer. Using recovered cedar and some redwood from our old deck, we built two new raised beds. Sarah came up with the box design and built the first one. Oliver and I then tackled the second, larger one. In addition, Sarah has been extending the existing mulched plantings in the yard to introduce local prairie grasses, milkweed for the monarchs, and native flowers.

Bounty

little gems

I really love putting the garden to bed for the winter: remembering the bounty, the warm humid days long passed, the delight of the first sprouts and flowers at the beginning of the summer. The passing of the seasons is a sacred time of reflection, being present in the best of each season, and looking ahead to the changes still to come. I love it when I am fortunate enough to slow down and savor it. So it was with great delight that I was able to uncover the last of our bounty in these tiny gems. After 32 days on the road, clocking 93:02 driving hours, and passing through 16 states plus the District of Columbia, we’re back home. House is in great shape, and the garden, barely planted before we left, is verdant. Sarah’s first activity upon arrival was to yank out all the weeds.

We’ll catch up on some backlogged posts about the final chapters of the trip in the next few days. We’re all looking forward to sleeping in our own beds tonight!
